New to 2013 is our Christian Educator Training Program, designed with Sunday School teachers, youth group leaders, and other volunteers leading classes within in a congregation.  Parents may also find the course useful.  Details.

Every course that ACM offers will be available throughout the year.  HOWEVER, the courses will only be facilitated during three particular months--the same months every year:  October, February, and May.  Facilitators will still be available outside of those months, but interaction with facilitators will be much more limited.

  $200.  In this 8 week course, Sunday School Teachers, Bible class instructors, and other lay leaders will be given a foundation of Bible knowledge enhanced with an apologetic emphasis.  The goal is to not only orient new and existing teachers with information about the Bible but to highlight points of friction with today's challenges to the Christian faith.  The course covers material that reflects areas of agreement shared by nearly all Christian denominations.

• The Death of Christianity

  • Teacher: Anthony Horvath

  4 weeks. FREE. Suggested Materials: Internet readings, guided tour. Christianity is demonstrably on the decline in America. This course documents that decline, probes the causes, and suggests solutions. Based on the content found at www.deathofchristianity.com, this course is centered heavily on discussion between the participants.

  

• Introduction to Logic & Critical Thinking

  • Teacher: Brian Auten

  4 weeks. This is an introductory course for learning logic and critical thinking skills to aid you in defending the Christian Faith. Those who have a basic knowledge of logic and critical thinking skills might consider taking the course "Critical Thinking & Logic". Required reading: A Rulebook for Arguments by Anthony Weston, plus online material provided by the Instructor Recommended reading: Asking the Right Questions by M. Neil Browne and Stuart M. Keeley

  

• Logic & Critical Thinking

  • Teacher: Brian Auten

  4 weeks. This course seeks to further help students in learning logic and critical thinking skills to aid them in defending the Christian Faith. While the introduction is highly recommended, it is not required. Those who have some logic studies may consider taking this course to further advance their skills in defending the Faith. Required reading and primary textbook: Critical Thinking: A Concise Guide (3rd Edition) by Bowell & Kemp, along with the reading and assignments from the book, each week an audio file will be provided discussing the application of the week's content to defending the Christian faith.

  

• Reliability of the New Testament Documents

  • Teacher: Anthony Horvath

  4 weeks. This class surveys the development of the New Testament documents and the formation of the canon in a basic, introductory fashion.  It then proceeds to discuss basic principles of literary interpretation and applies those principles to a number of alleged biblical contradictions.

  Required Materials: The New Testament Documents: Are They Reliable? by F.F. Bruce. 

  

• The Historical Jesus: A Survey of the Evidence

  • Teacher: Anthony Horvath

  4 weeks.  In modern times it has become fashionable to dispute that Jesus even existed. This course will survey the evidence for his existence and go further and discuss the evidence for the existence of Jesus as Christians believe him to be. Some challenges to the Christian view will be raised and addressed but the emphasis will be on a straightforward analysis of the evidence. TWO 90 minute lectures by Dr. Gary Habermas exclusively available to the academy are provided in this course.
  
  Strongly Suggested Materials.... The Historical Jesus by Dr. Gary Habermas, Jesus under Fire by Wilkens and Moreland, The Quest of the Historical Jesus by Albert Schweitzer, and others.

  

• Basic New Testament Greek

  • Teacher: Glenn Jones

  6 weeks. Learn the Greek alphabet, how to sound out Greek words, how to identify nouns, verbs, definite articles, and how to use this knowledge with resources like a Bible interlinear or lexicon. Strongly Suggested Materials: Basic Greek In 30 Minutes a Day by Jim Found.

  

• Christ Promised in the Old Testament

  • Teacher: Anthony Horvath

  2 Weeks. Could you demonstrate that Jesus was the Christ from the Old Testament alone as the apostles did? (Acts 17:11, 18:28, 1 Cor 15:3). This survey of major OT evidences for Jesus as the Christ will help you see how Christianity and Judaism were related why Jews found it compelling at the time. This is an introduction that will help in personal growth and evangelism efforts.

• Mere Christianity

  • Teacher: Glenn Jones

  4 weeks. This course is an introduction to basic Christian beliefs and how one ought to live out the Christian life for the glory of God. The course is divided into four weeks according the the four sections of the book, Mere Christianity. One section a week will be required reading for the class, along with supplemental online material provide by the course instructor. Required reading: Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis, plus additional online material provided by the Instructor.

  

• Survey of the Pentateuch

  • Teacher: Anthony Horvath

  6 weeks. Anthony Horvath taught Old Testament for four years at the 7th and 9th grade levels.
  
  The Old Testament is an important but often overlooked part of Christianity. Understanding the New Testament requires a broad understanding of the Old but because of its size and the diversity of styles, knowledge of the OT often consists of random but famous bible stories, such as David and Goliath. This survey will cover the first five books of the Old Testament, also known as the Pentateuch, and address them in light of the New Testament and Christianity. This survey will lay a foundation for further study of the Old Testament and highlight why this is necessary for an understanding of the New Testament.

• Worldview Wars: Why We Abort the Disabled

  • Teacher: Anthony Horvath

  6 weeks. Have you ever wondered how a society comes to openly discuss the sale of aborted baby parts, 'aborting' children even after they are born, or calculating the worth of a person based on how many more years he is expected to live? Why are children with birth defects aborted at extremely high rates--upward to 90%?

  This course will track the philosophies and ideologies that have brought us to our current state, beginning with Thomas Malthus in 1800 and ending in our current day with contemporary examples that show that the answer to this question is the answer to other questions such as, "Why do we ration care for the old?", etc.
  
  Expect to do a lot of reading in this course--much of it available on the web. This is a guided tour through the culture of death by Anthony Horvath, previous president of Wisconsin Lutherans for Life (2011-2012) and Director of Policy Intersections Research Center.

• Origins: A Survey

  • Teacher: Anthony Horvath

  4 Weeks. Is evolutionary theory true? What does the Bible say? What does the science say? Is there scientific evidence for a young earth creation? Or is it just something the Bible says? In this survey of the issues, the participant will explore the critical issues involved in the Creation-Evolution-Intelligent Design Debate so they can make their own, informed, decisions. This course lays important groundwork for future study.

  Strongly Suggested Materials: Total Truth by Nancey Pearcy and The Ultimate Proof of Creation by Jason Lisle.

  

• Studies in Atheism

  • Teacher: Mariano Grinbank

  4 weeks. Before there were the 'New Atheists' there were the old ones. This investigation into the atheism of Dawkins, Harris, etc, looks into the foundations of modern day atheism and its pervasive hostility to theism and Christianity. This course ends before Christmas. (Just in case the FFRF had any ideas...)

  

• Jesus According to...

  • Teacher: Mariano Grinbank

  3 Weeks.  How do different cultures, cults, and world religions view Jesus? How are these similar and different to the Christian view, which is rooted in the New Testament? Why does it matter? This is what is covered in this worldview course on how others view Jesus in contrast to Christianity.

  This is a capstone project for those in our literary apologetics certificate program, and not open to the general public.

  

• Online Writing Workshop - Feb 2013

  • Teacher: Debbie Thompson

  4 weeks.  This writing workshop is led by Christian writing contest judge and book reviewer Debbie Thompson.

• Chestertonian Essays: Observing and Conveying Wonder in the style of G.K. Chesterton

  • Teacher: Debbie Thompson

  6 Weeks.  This course will read, analyze, discuss, and then finally model Chesterton's fun and insightful essays with participants writing their own Chesterton-inspired essays. The model essays are found in Tremendous Trifles which are available free for download on Amazon Kindle and also for purchase in book form.

  

• Principles of Literary Apologetics

  • Teacher: Ebony Murdoch

  5 weeks.   Suitable for both Christian writers and Christian apologists, this course outlines the principles of communicating the truth of the Christian faith through imaginative literature (poetry, drama, and prose fiction). We will consider the role of the Imagination in conveying the truth of Christianity, and explore the way in which important authors such as CS Lewis, JRR Tolkien, GK Chesterton, and Flannery O’Connor used stories to convey truth. We will also examine the challenges of writing in various genres, and reflect on living and growing as a literary apologist. Core texts will include JRR Tolkien’s “On Fairy-Stories”, selected essays by CS Lewis, and short stories by Chesterton, O’Connor, and others.

  

• Literary Interpreter-Apologist: Faith mirrored in great literary productions- Dracula.

  6 Weeks. This course is an introduction to reading fiction through the eyes of faith to discover and discuss issues which concern both believers and unbelievers. While the possiblities for this are endless, here we will try to focus our eyes on the nature of faith and evidence.
  
  Required books: Dracula by Bram Stoker, A Skeleton in God's Closet by Paul Maier, and New Evidence Which Demands a Verdict by Josh McDowell.

  4 weeks.  Why do people gravitate to story?  What is the best explanation?  What are the implications?   When one hears the word 'myth', many think it means 'an untrue story.'  A better definition might be a 'story that moves you.'  But why should a story move anyone?  What should the Christian's approach to story (and the arts) be?  This course studies all of these questions, drawing on the insight of writers such as C. S. Lewis, John Warwick Montgomery, and other. 

  

• The Writing Process

  • Teacher: Ebony Murdoch

  4 Weeks. In this four-week writing workshop, participants will learn how to make their writing process more effective and more productive, leading to more powerful, compelling writing. This course focuses on the stages of idea generation, drafting, revision, and copy-editing: participants will learn how to improve their writing with distinctive strategies for each stage. This is a workshop class: participants will post examples of their own work in progress, receive feedback, and comment on each other's work. (Note: the fourth stage of the writing process, Wordsmithing, has its own course which can be taken before, after, or concurrently with this course.)
